1. Training course on Disaster Risk Management for Hotels

Training course on Disaster Risk Management for HotelsThis two day training course on “Disaster Risk Management for Hotels” was delivered in Bangkok from 27-28 June 2005 by the School of Travel Industry Management in collaboration with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and Thai Hotels Association. Bangkok. This course introduced participants to the development of a disaster plan for individual properties. The course which was attended by senior hotel managers concentrated on cost effective ways to develop plans, procedures and training policies and implementation strategies to ensure the least possible loss of life and property damage after a disaster.

2. Expert Advice for the UN ESCAP Interagency/Expert Group Meeting on Tourism and Poverty Reduction in Bali

This was a cooperative effort between Dr. Christopher Edmonds from the East-West Center, research associates of the Bangkok office and Dr. Walter Jamieson who assisted the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific -Transport and Tourism Division in developing background research material and presentations for the interagency expert group meeting in Bali. The objective of this meeting was to share experiences on tourism initiatives that have direct impacts on poverty reduction and develop indicators for monitoring the impacts of mainstream tourism in poverty reduction. The meeting agreed on a set of indicators and initiatives and developed an action plan that included a research agenda, a need for national and regional data collection and analysis on the agreed to indicators as well as knowledge management strategies to ensure equitable access to the developing information and analysis on tourism development and poverty reduction. The team will continue to work with the ESCAP Transport and Tourism Division in linking mainstream tourism with poverty reduction.
 

3. Workshop on “Future Leaders of Andaman Sea” funded by World Tourism Organization

Workshop on “Future Leaders of Andaman Sea” 
    funded by World Tourism OrganizationAs part of the tsunami recovery effort, the World tourism Organization (WTO) also funded the Center to manage an eight-day workshop in southern Thailand. The workshop was centered on capacity building for 50 young people from the Tsunami affected areas. The initiative was based on the concept that there is great potential for local young people if they are equipped with the appropriate knowledge and skills to help local people through their sorrow and loss. The workshop provided a unique opportunity to yield tangible results for the participants and their communities that would eventually generate sustainable impacts.

4. Public Presentation on “Corporate Sustainable and Responsible Tourism”

This public presentation was delivered by Mr. Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts. The Banyan Tree Hotel and Resorts has the reputation of being a leader in both quality development and service and community and environmental responsibility. The presentation illustrated company's overall policy to tourism development and operations. It is a unique opportunity to be exposed to a company that is effectively implementing sustainable and responsible tourism policies while being one of the leading resort operators in the world.

5. Workshops on “Developing Sustainable Tourism Strategy at the Provincial and Cluster Level”

Workshops on Developing Sustainable Tourism 
    Strategy at the Provincial and Cluster Level
ACTPPR was active in providing assistance to the Office of Policy and Strategy of Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand to enhance the capacity of Ministry government officials working in 75 provinces in Thailand in developing tourism strategies for their own provinces. Two workshops on “Developing Sustainable Tourism Strategy at the Local Level” and two workshops on “Developing Sustainable Tourism Strategy at the Cluster Level” were delivered by the ACTPPR team. The workshop received highly positive responses from participants in both groups and there are plans to continue training activity.

    Tourism Strategy and Tourism Networking in Chainat Province”

Due to the success of the previous workshop that the Center provided for 75 provinces in Thailand, the center was requested by Chainat Province to facilitate stakeholder consultation and assist in developing a sustainable tourism strategy for Chainat province.

7. Public Lecture on “Achieving Corporate Social Responsibility while Meeting the Bottom Line”

Public Lecture on “Achieving Corporate Social Responsibility while 
    Meeting the Bottom Line”The Center in collaboration with Dhurakij Pundit University organized a public lecture on “Achieving Corporate Social Responsibility while Meeting the Bottom Line” in September 2006. Mr. William Black, Managing Director from the Bed Management Company shared the success on the CSR policy of the company with an example of the Shinta Mani Hotel in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Based on this event, we prepared a briefing note about this excellent example and have initiated a research project to determine the role of Thai hotels in CSR and poverty reduction, which will start in early 2007. The event was generously supported by Hotelmark Corporation based in Hawaii and active throughout Asia. The center is now looking at sponsoring similar presentations in other locations in Southeast Asia.

Study on “The Assessment of the Potential Tourism of the Kampuan Sub-district, Ranong Province, Thailand funded by USAID

Study on “The Assessment of the Potential Tourism of the Kampuan 
    Sub-district, Ranong Province, Thailand funded by USAIDTIM through the ACTPPR center in Bangkok conducted a study funded by the Post-Tsunami Sustainable Coastal Livelihoods Program of USAID. The local community expressed their interest in a small scale tourism development since it was seen as a way of diversifying the local economy and generating extra income for local people. The final report indicates not only an analysis of tourism potential but also produces a series of tourism priority action recommendations. In early 2007, there will be a follow-up workshop on “Developing a Tourism Strategic Plan” for local officials and major stakeholders in Suksamran District, Ranong Province.

 

Development of “Community-Based Tourism Monitoring and Evaluation Toolkit for Poverty Reduction Planning, Assessment and Management” for SNV


Development of “Community-Based Tourism 
    Monitoring and Evaluation Toolkit for Poverty Reduction Planning, Assessment 
    and Management” for SNVThe Bangkok office working with a team of experts developed a community-based tourism monitoring and evaluation toolkit for poverty reduction planning, assessment and management for the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) in Vietnam. The toolkit which is designed to provide an overview of the important concepts and rationale for monitoring tourism impacts and a methodology for developing monitoring and evaluation systems for project-level applications. There was a specific focus placed upon poverty reduction, particularly (though not exclusively) in rural areas. The toolkit is a user-friendly mechanism that will provide accurate and relevant information on measuring and managing tourism impacts in a community development and povertyr reduction context.

Development of an Interpretive Plan for World Heritage ‘Vat Phou and 
    Associated Ancient Settlements within Champasak Cultural Landscape, Lao PDR’ 
    funded by UNESCOThis project carried out by an interdisciplinary team was concerned with the development of interpretative strategies that would enhance the visitors’ understanding of Vat Phou as well as recognize local values and provide for much-needed opportunities for income generation by local residents. Several strategies are being implemented. A visitor management and interpretive plan was developed with portions of the plan already in the implementation phase

 

4. Development of “Preliminary Tourism Standards for Natural, Cultural and Recreation Attractions” for Thailand, 2005

The Bangkok office working for the Office of Tourism Development, Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand helped to develop a set of tourism standards for natural, cultural and recreation attractions. The project’s objective was to develop a certification system that will allow various government agencies and the private sector to improve the management of a resource, increase visitors’ satisfaction on quality tourism destinations and help increase the quality of various attractions in terms of their readiness and capability to accommodate tourism activities.


5. Proceedings for the IMT-GT Meeting (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand – Growth Triangle) on Tourism Cooperation, 2005

The Center provided assistance to the Office of Tourism Development, Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand in preparing the proceedings for the IMT-GT meeting on tourism cooperation between Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand held in Trang province, Thailand.


6. Proceedings for the ASEAN Tourism Meetings in Chiang Mai, Thailand, 2005

The Center provided assistance to the Office of Tourism Development, Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand in preparing the proceedings for the ASEAN tourism meetings on tourism cooperation between 10 countries in Southeast Asia.
