The Japanese Studies Center was established at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand in 1981, and a grant from the Japanese Foundation allowed the construction of a building to house the Center. To opening ceremony in June 17, 1985 was presided over by H.R.H. Princes Mahachakri Sirindhorn, who is the put on of the Institute of East Asian Studies. The Japanese Studies Center became part of the namely formed Institute of East Asian Studies in 1984 and is affiliate with the APEC (Asian Pacific Economic Community) Studies Program Started in 1995.
The objectives of the Japanese Studies Center are to serve as the leading Thai Center for Studies on Japan, to promote teaching and learning about Japan throughout the Thai educational system ; to disseminate knowledge to the public via publications, seminars, lectures and cultural programs to promote relationships among scholars and institutions specializing in Japanese studies, especially in Asia.
The activities of the Center focus on research and training. The Center has its own research library and audio - visual center. Scholars form various disciplines are affiliated with the Center and conduct research on a wide range of topics. Foreign research fellows are invited for period and offered facilities to conduct research. Their research results are presented at various seminars and conferences. In addition, cooperation is extended to visiting fellows for with research interests in Thailand. The Center offers courses in Japanese language and seminars for teacher college institution of Japanese language and culture.
The Journal of Japanese Studies is published semi - annually by the Center. The Center has also published a series of research reports and an occasional newsletter.
