Seminar The Institute of East Asian Studies has greatly expanded its academic services to the public in the form of lecture series, seminars, and conferences. Each year at least one international conference, several national seminars and numerous lectures and panel discussions are organized on selected topics about Japanese, Chinese and Korean Studies as well as on current events and issues in the East Asian region. These activities provide forums for exchanging ideas and policy recommendations among academicians, government officials and the private sector.

Training The Institute of East Asian Studies plans to provide three types of training programs annually. The first one is the training of secondary school teachers and Teachers College instructors on East Asian Studies in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The second is the joint training program for Japanese language teachers, with the International Center, Keio University. The third one is the training program for businessmen on joint venture issues.

Language Program The Institute has set up a language teaching program. At present only Japanese language courses are available for elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. In the future, the Institute plans to extend the teaching to Chinese language and may provide special language course for people in various professions, for example, businessmen, tour guides and technicians, etc.

Library and Data Bank service The Institute's library now possesses about 23,000 volumes of books in Japanese, English, Chinese and Thai, around 380 titles of periodicals in the four languages, 980 reels of microfilms, 700 casettes of tapes, 60 casettes of videotape and 50 set of slides.

Realizing that the service we are rendering is still inadequate because there has been a continuous demand for statistical data and current information facts concerning East Asian countries, the Institute has set up another unit to coordinate with the Library, the so-called "Data Bank", in 1987. At present the Data Bank consists of 2 main sections : a) Bibliographic data base ; b) Numeric data base.

Publications The Institute publishes two journals, two newsletters and several research monographs as well as translated texts. The Journal of East Asian Studies is published twice a year in the Thai language, while the Thai-Japanese Studies Journal is published three times a year, also in Thai with some special issues in the English language. The Institute of East Asian Studies Newsletter is a quarterly newsletter describing the Institute's activities and including information on speakers, seminars, conferences, visitors and publications. The Thailand-Japan Monitoring Newsletter is a monthly newsletter focusing on current news and issues affecting Thai-Japanese relations.

Scholar Exchange The Institute of East Asian Studies welcome visiting scholars and researchers from foreign countries wishing to come and do research in Thailand. Because of limited funds, the Institute can provide only office space and access to library facilities. However, the Institute plans to provide some financial assistance when funds are available.
