Introduction & History
Inaugurated by a cabinet resolution (11 January 1954), the Faculty was founded under the establishment of the Faculty of Social Administration Act, 25 January 1954 which is also the Faculty Anniversary Day. In response to the government's policy on public welfare and social security, the Faculty aims to promote the education on social work, social security, and public relations as fields of social science toward the standard of renowned universities overseas.
In the early stage, the Faculty had two fields of studies, Social Work and Journalism. In 1965, the field of Sociology and Anthropology was included following the Royal Decree (Second Edition) on the establishment of the faculty of Social Administration. Later on, those fields had considerably been developed and upgraded into the Faculty of Journalism and the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology in 1979 and 1984 respectively. Since the establishment, the Faculty of Social Administration was recognized not only by its excellence in educational services but also in other academic and social services. In 1994, under the Fifth Ministry of University Ordinance on Administrative Organization in Thammasat University (1994), the Faculty of Social Administration was reorganized into three sections, the administrative office, the Department of Community Development and the Department of Social Work.
At present, the Faculty offers undergraduate and graduate studies in both regular programs and special programs. Moreover, the Faculty has also commenced undergraduate study at Lampang campus of Thammasat University since 1998.
Further, the Faculty the Department of Social work are divided into two specializations based on 1) target groups / areas of practice and 2) concentrations method. The former comprises of five programs: Social Work, Medical in Social Work, Social Work in Education, Social Work in Criminal Justice Administration, and Labor and Welfare Development. The latter is consisted of four concentrations: Direct Practice, Research, Social Welfare Policy, and Social Welfare Administration.
